There are around 30–60 different species of Cornus, a woody plant in the family of Cornaceae, which is also known as dogwood and can generally be distinguished by their blossoms, berries, and distinctive coloured bark. Cornus is deciduous, meaning they shed they’re leaves annually and with the very attractive coloured barks this allows the Cornus to have all-year round interest. The stems can be pruned hard to ground in early Spring (March) to maintain young colourful stems and can look stunning planted in groups. Plant in any aspect but ideal for borders, mass planting and watersides. Full sun or partial shade depending on variety, with most varieties being either hardy or half hardy. Please note that the more exposure to the sun these shrubs have the brighter the new stems will be so don’t swamp them taller shrubs or tree’s in your garden.
